The Reason for Luke’s Unique Wording in Luke 20:27-40

In this article I first examine the differences between Luke 20:34-40 and Mark’s version of the controversy between Jesus and the Sadducees over the resurrection. Assuming Markan priority, I will then rehearse the various solutions to this problem and evaluate the weight of the arguments employed. I will concentrate on a thesis that dominated patristic monastic thought and is being revived today by mostly feminist exegetes, namely that Luke is advocating celibacy. After rehearsing the considerable evidence for this hypothesis, I will argue that Luke’s teaching of the believer’s immortality in the intermediate state better explains all of the additions to the Markan text.
