A parable every day keeps the doctor away. Jesus’ stories can dramatically change our lives. So join in Participating in the Parables of Jesus by reading one every day for a month. Click the download button to read the file. Here is a description of the contents.
Christians have cherished the parables of Jesus for twenty one centuries. We love a good story, and the twists and surprises in the parables capture our attention. The parables entertain but also inform. We see ourselves in these ancient stories which Jesus recited in the streets of Capernaum and along the shores of the Sea of Galilee. Plain and simple, the stories hit home.
This month we will explore five significant themes in Jesus’ parables. First, we catch a new glimpse of God penetrating our world. The stories present a brilliantly painted image of God, not as an ogre ready to punish us but as a compassionate father overflowing with grace and mercy.
Second, the kingdom of God comes alive. We see the reign of God’s kingdom realized here and now in the actions and words of Jesus. Yet sometimes God disciplines us if we fail to pay attention to those whom God cares about: the marginalized, disenfranchised, and underprivileged.
The majority of parables center on discipleship or illustrate how we fail to live up to God’s demands. Frequently, we are showered with the mercy of God even though we don’t deserve it. But sometimes we are convicted out of our socks. Confronted by a reflection of ourselves that we don’t appreciate, we immediately run to Christ for forgiveness and renewal. Finally, Jesus envisions the ideal community that the reign of God instigates. These unforgettable tales radically transform the way we look at ourselves, each other, and life itself.
Jesus yearns to teach another generation of disciples through his challenging word pictures. So let’s walk with Jesus for a month and participate in his parables. I suggest that you place yourself right in the middle of the story and see what happens. New insights, out-loud laughs, unexpected surprises, but also convicted consciences will surely result because the Holy Spirit continues to apply these parables to our personal lives and to situations in our world.

The first portion of the month will concentrate on a series of pictures or images of transformation. I hope to create a photograph or a movie in your imagination of how God works in shaping and transforming our lives. The second part of the month will focus on the book of 2 Timothy and visualize how God used Paul to mold the life of Timothy and transform him to become more like Christ.
So each day as you read God’s word and reflect upon these meditations, ask God to transform your lives by the power of his Holy Spirit. This time of the year as we approach the celebration of Jesus’ death and resurrection is a call to deepening our commitment to Christ. It is a time of intensity, of crying out to God for renewal, of unashamedly repenting of our shortcomings by allowing the cutting of God’s conviction to purify us and consecrate us to holiness and wholeness.
But this time of transformation is filled with hope as well. As we capture a vision of Christ’s supernatural power for change, we are carried along to new heights of faith. We trust Jesus completely and whole heartedly. We expect new shoots of growth in our life. We anticipate divine energy flowing through us. We experience union with Christ and a new depth of fellowship with the One who created us and is now recreating us. We are transformed from one degree of glory to another as we behold Christ around us, in us, and through us. May these words based on Scripture bring you to the cross and convince you of the power of Christ’s resurrection.
Lent is an important time of the year to reflect upon what Jesus did for us and how that knowledge can positively affect our daily lives. Here are a month of devotionals entitled Following Jesus on the Way to the Cross.
I pray that these thoughts will draw you closer to Jesus. Click the download button to read the file.
Young people get the most out of a worship service packed with quick snappy venues and well-placed one liners that rock their world. On the other hand, adults discover meaning through a pattern of interconnections where a similar theme is woven through various experiences. Adults love a well-connected service that ties together the scripture and application, the songs and prayers, a dramatic reading and the tensions that come out of the newspaper this week. I have discovered that adults cherish a worship time that promotes the close connections between the promises in the OT and the Christian life in the NT. So for a month read a devotional each day so you can see how God loves to supply us with meaningful connections over a thousand years of Bible history. Click the download button to read the file.
A famous quip about the relationship of the two testaments reads, “the New is in the Old concealed; the Old is in the New revealed.” In 2 Cor 3:15 Paul explains that when Jewish readers examine their Scriptures, a veil covers their hearts and only when they turn to Christ is the veil removed. Jewish exegetes, on the other hand, protest that Christians place a mask over their face so that they cannot see the real meaning of Israel’s Scriptures. They contend that the person of Jesus masks the original intent of the Scriptures. Who is correct?
We will attempt to unravel and uncover the concealment. What principles did Christians use to make clear that Jesus was the fulfillment of the OT? How do the OT and the NT tie together into a meaningful whole that pumps our spiritual veins with divine meaning and energy?
Here are the statistical results that scholars have unearthed about the relationship of the two testaments. There are 1604 NT citations of 1276 different OT passages. In fact, 229 of the 260 chapters in the NT have at least two references to the OT while 19 chapters have one instance, leaving only 12 chapters without a specific reference to the OT.
I hope that you will find these investigations and applications both compelling and inspiring. Jesus can be hailed as the focus of the entire Bible and as the lens through which we discern the ultimate meaning of reality. May the reality of your faith be deepened this month!
I have experienced in my ministry the ecstasy of seeing lives revolutionized, the agony of watching lives ruined, and the monotony of leaving people unchanged. At one time I was satisfied just as long as people continued to be faithful in their church participation. But increasingly I have become convinced that the malaise of the status quo is as distasteful to God as spiritual regression. We cannot stay the same. We have to go forward or certainly we will retreat backwards.
That’s why transformation has become the key word in my ministry. Real life changes in ordinary people have become my goal. Frequently religion concentrates on words or ceremonies. But I’m convinced that words are just movements of the air and ceremonies only meaningless exercises unless they produce a real difference in the everyday life of regular people.
Therefore I wanted to write a book that would speak to the real needs of everyday Christians. Each of us needs a plan for growth, a manual that can move us to the next level of character development. As I reflected upon the most blatant needs in the Christian community, the subject of transformation kept registering in my brain. For me the most appealing word in the English dictionary is transformation. I want to experience positive changes in attitude and action that lead to a productive and fulfilling life. Transformation is my number one desire and I believe it is yours as well.
I’m convinced that God will settle for nothing less than a radical transformation. The surgery required to make changes in our life is inevitably painful. We become established in our relationships, entrenched in our lifestyle, and ensconced in our negative feelings about ourselves. Frequently future ideals remain more diffuse than intelligible, and the path toward these goals demands a commitment and energy level that our present spiritual state cannot handle. We need to elevate our spiritual maturity to a higher level.
To alleviate such problems, this book has been conceived. Transformation happens in bite-sized pieces. My favorite verse in the Bible is 2 Corinthians 3:16. “And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit” (NIV). “Being changed from one degree of glory to another” (RSV), that is my goal for you the reader as well as for myself. For that reason this book is divided into 365 mini-transformations, one for every day of the year.
I’m confident that an everyday digestion of the contents of this devotional will spur transformation in your life. Join the journey and you will not be disappointed!
